SurgiBox Is Solving the Operating Room Bottleneck by Making Surgery Possible Anywhere

The system is rapidly deployed, cost-effective, and ultra-portable. It weighs under 5 kilograms, inflates in around 120 seconds, and operates for more than four hours on a single charge. It uses a battery-powered Smart Control Module with active airflow and HEPA H13 filtration, a single-use, sterile SurgiBubble, and a pop-up frame to stabilize the enclosure. Together, these components create a positive-pressure, HEPA-filtered environment that protects the patient’s surgical site from surrounding and medical personnel-related infection risks, while also protecting providers from exposure to bodily fluids.

In small private practices, it enables office-based procedures that previously required hospital or ambulatory surgery center block time. The company’s materials highlight the potential for increased throughput, streamlined workflows, complete control over scheduling, and efficiency gains by eliminating unnecessary travel between clinics and surgical centers.

 

One use case from Jordan shows a vascular and transplant surgeon conducting wound debridement on a diabetic patient’s foot in a hotel setting. His takeaway was clear: procedures that once required a full operating room could now be performed in an office-like setting, with no OR fees, no additional personnel, and meaningful efficiency gains for both the healthcare system and the practice.

 

In the ICU, SurgiField addresses another critical bottleneck: the risk and cost of transporting unstable patients to the operating room. The company’s materials state that surgery in the ICU with SurgiField eliminates 70% of the risk of adverse events that occur during transport, reduces staffing needs, keeps the patient safe, and reclaims two hours of OR revenue. That is not just a clinical improvement. It is an operational and economic unlock.

 

Beyond hospitals, the need becomes even more urgent.

 

SurgiField has been used in real-world settings, including a mastectomy in a tent in Myanmar, wound debridement in a hotel in Jordan, shrapnel removal in an abandoned building in Myanmar, and ulna fracture repair in a dressing room of a major Ukrainian hospital on the frontlines. These are not theoretical use cases. They show the system’s ability to create surgical access where conventional infrastructure is absent.

 

The dual-use military case is equally compelling. Modern conflict can stretch evacuation timelines far beyond the golden hour. When evacuation is delayed or impossible, survivable injuries can become fatal because forward surgical capability is not available. SurgiField changes that equation by fitting into a rucksack and turning a tent, basement, vehicle, field hospital, or naval vessel into an OR-like surgical environment in minutes. It supports prolonged field care, en-route surgery, parallel procedures during mass casualty events, and reduced dependence on heavy infrastructure.

 

SurgiField was built on a strong scientific and clinical foundation, engineered at MIT and co-developed with Harvard Medical School, Médecins Sans Frontières clinicians, and surgeons to ensure the technology reflects real operating-room needs. The materials also reference peer-reviewed research, benchtop testing, particle count data, and results from a study in Lviv, Ukraine. The system is backed by more than 20 patents and has achieved key regulatory milestones, including FDA registration in the United States, CE Mark under MDR certification in Europe, alongside Japanese, Turkish, and Saudi regulatory approvals, and approvals in additional markets currently in progress.
