Modern agriculture is a complex, unpredictable, and unique business in which farmers must meet the changing needs of our planet while dealing with the increasing pressures from climate change, soil erosion and biodiversity loss. However, it is true that modern agriculture, thanks to the development of agritech, has come up with a lot of solutions for some of the most common issues regarding the farming business. Nevertheless, there are still some unsolved matters that can affect the farm’s performance. On October 6, the 97th GILC Agro Summit was held to help investors revamp their agro-investment strategies, deploy short and long-term responses to boost food and nutrition security, reduce risks and strengthen food systems. During this summit, various world-known investors shared their precious views on what they believe to be the most severe challenges farmers are currently facing.

Nimrod Gerber, MD at Vital Capital, Cuprys, stated that there is a tremendous increase in the cost of fertilizers and seeds. Not to mention the big difference in availability between them. He also noted that agriculture is a seasonal business, so even a somewhat short delay in fertilizers can immediately hurt the production. He said that in the end, it all comes down to how farmers manage themselves and their production.

Nagaraja PrakasamPartner at Acumen, India, mentioned that the supply chain is severely damaged right now. As a result, the harvests are drastically affected, with crops rotting in the fields. Meanwhile, food transport is slowly turning into a logistics nightmare, which makes the international transport of fresh goods extremely difficult and expensive, which can seriously affect their production output while simultaneously increasing food waste.

Jos Boeren, Head of Agriculture & Food Investment, France, said that the critical challenge that farmers are facing currently is how to find a way to secure productivity for the next generation. What he means by that is that farming is changing. It’s slowly becoming more corporate and a more complex business. He stated that to maintain the productivity of the next generation of farms, it is crucial to provide concrete solutions on how we can support families to transition to that next phase.
