Investors' Outlook: December Issue
This issue’s discussions uncover pivotal economic trends and investment dynamics in key regions

This issue’s discussions uncover pivotal economic trends and investment dynamics in key regions. Switzerland maintains financial stability with interest rate adjustments, while Australia and New Zealand are enhancing tech and agricultural sectors respectively. Spain navigates marketing challenges amid strict privacy laws and Germany focuses on economic reforms. The UAE’s startup ecosystem continues to attract significant investments and the United States balances economic optimism with strategic trade considerations. Stay updated on these and other developments in our comprehensive global overview.

What is happening in Switzerland?

Werner Schuenemann, Founder and Managing Partner at Xandance & Partners in Switzerland, noted that the Swiss central bank has recently lowered the interbank rate to 0.5%, the lowest among all independent central banks globally. This move is likely to spur investments in fixed assets, reflecting the strong performance of the Swiss economy. Additionally, the looming scenario of negative interest rates suggests that Switzerland is effectively navigating through its economic challenges.

What is happening in Australia?

Craig Astill, CEO at the Caason Group, discussed the economic shifts occurring in Melbourne, Australia. Formerly ranked as the world’s most liveable city, Melbourne has now become one of the least favored cities for business in Australia, plummeting from the second to the eighth spot nationally. This decline is compounded by rising inflation and steady high interest rates across the country. Despite significant migration, Victoria is not benefiting, leading to a considerable drop in high-end housing prices, signaling challenging times for the local economy.

What is happening in New Zealand?

Andeed Ma, Partner at Artificial Intelligence International Institute (AIII), discussed the economic landscape in New Zealand, emphasizing the potential impact of changes in U.S. leadership on export tariffs, particularly affecting key sectors like meat processing and dairy. Despite these challenges, the niche market for premium meats remains robust due to stable demand from major U.S. buyers. Additionally, New Zealand’s real estate sector is experiencing a revival, particularly in the ‘golden triangle’ of Hamilton and Tauranga, where significant price adjustments have made properties more attractive to investors seeking long-term rental opportunities. This dynamic situation presents both challenges and opportunities for the country’s economy.

What is happening in Kenya?

Florent Nduwayezu, Syndicate Investor at EUVC, shared insights into the recent economic developments in Kenya. After a period of instability marked by demonstrations earlier in the year, the Kenyan economy has shown signs of stabilization. The central bank’s decision to lower interest rates is expected to stimulate further activity, particularly benefiting the dominant service sectors and the gradually expanding manufacturing industry. With the government adopting more flexible regulatory approaches, Kenya is increasingly being viewed as an attractive investment hub. Florent remains optimistic about the country’s economic outlook for 2025, anticipating continued improvements and increased investor interest.

What is happening in Senegal?

Nadia Seemuth, Managing Director at Jambaar Capital, provided an update on Senegal’s economic and political climate. Following the presidential and parliamentary elections earlier this year, the country is experiencing a resurgence in business activities as the new government, having secured a majority in parliament, begins to implement its promised reforms. Senegal, known for its democratic stability, continues to attract investors. Nadia highlighted the optimistic environment fostered by the government’s proactive support of the tech sector, particularly through initiatives like the startup act which has significantly bolstered Senegal’s position as a tech investment hub in Francophone West Africa. She remains hopeful that these developments will further establish Senegal as a key player in the regional economy.

What is happening in Singapore?

Nishant Idnani, Managing Director at Vaultus Green Funding, reported significant momentum in Singapore’s clean tech and green tech sectors. This surge is largely due to falling energy storage costs, making renewables more competitive than fossil fuels and boosting investments in technologies that replace diesel generators and enhance battery storage solutions. Additionally, Enhanced Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations are driving investments in sectors such as battery and tire recycling and vehicle disposal, further enriching the green asset landscape. Nishant emphasized the growth in biorefinery projects, supported by initiatives for sustainable aviation fuel and ethanol blending, which are shaping a promising future for green investments in the region as we move towards 2025.

What is happening in Uganda?

Jon Bennion-Pedley, CEO at Investment Owl, highlighted Uganda’s current economic focus and potential. While acknowledging the country’s excitement over resources like gold and oil, particularly with the development of the East African pipeline, he stressed the importance of not overlooking agriculture. Uganda remains predominantly agrarian and Jon sees significant untapped potential in revitalizing and expanding agricultural opportunities, which he views as promising for the short and medium-term future in East Africa.

What is happening in Spain?

Tali Sella, CEO at Shoof, discussed the marketing landscape in Spain, noting the unique challenges posed by European privacy laws that limit certain marketing practices common in countries like the United States and Israel. She highlighted efforts by the Spanish government to transform Barcelona and Catalonia into thriving hubs for startups. Despite the potential for changes with government shifts, significant investments are being made to bolster Barcelona’s position as a startup epicenter. Tali expressed that while Spain has hidden talents across the country, not just in Catalonia, the Spanish marketing sector still has considerable ground to cover to match the dynamism seen in more established markets.

What is happening in Germany?

Anneliese Sound, Managing Director at Future Potential Management, described the economic challenges in Germany, particularly in revitalizing investments across various sectors. She highlighted the need for enhanced focus on infrastructure, especially in digital and energy domains, as the country transitions from nuclear power to renewables, which currently meet only the existing energy demands. This shift is proving problematic, especially with increased evening energy consumption from electric vehicles and heating systems. Anneliese also noted that traditional investment sectors like real estate, automotive and heavy chemicals are struggling, pointing to a broader need for Germany to overhaul its business models and adapt to modern economic demands. This includes addressing energy sufficiency and rethinking investment strategies to foster growth and sustainability in the evolving market landscape.

What is happening in the UAE?

Joseph Barnett, Founder at Reign Investments, shared that the UAE is currently experiencing a significant surge in investment activities, particularly within the startup ecosystem. In November alone, startups in the MENA region based in the UAE attracted approximately $194 million in investments, positioning the UAE as a leader in capital raising within the region, well ahead of Saudi Arabia’s $76 million during the same period. This investment momentum underscores the UAE’s robust and dynamic market for startups and capital ventures.

What is happening in the US?

Sebright Chen, Chairman and CEO at Summer Atlantic Capital, highlighted the current economic dynamics in the United States, noting an atmosphere of optimism as Wall Street hits record highs amidst concerns over inflation and global trade relations. The economic outlook remains robust, with a strong performance of the US dollar and bullish sentiments towards the economy. Anticipated economic policies aim to encourage and stimulate global companies to engage more actively with the US market, potentially fostering further economic growth.
