Beyond AI: What Other Emerging Technologies Should Investors Watch?
Artificial intelligence has dominated headlines and investment portfolios in recent years, revolutionizing industries and reshaping the way businesses operate

Artificial intelligence has dominated headlines and investment portfolios in recent years, revolutionizing industries and reshaping the way businesses operate. However, while AI continues to be a powerful force in the tech sector, investors seeking the next wave of high-growth opportunities should look beyond it. Several emerging fields, particularly biotechnology, space technology and energy innovations, are rapidly advancing and presenting compelling investment prospects. From groundbreaking drug approvals fueling biotech’s resurgence to the commercialization of space and next-generation energy solutions, these sectors are poised to drive technological evolution and economic impact. This article explores why these industries are worth watching and how they may shape the future of innovation.

Biotech and Personalized Medicine: A New Era in Healthcare Investment

Advances in biotechnology are driving a fundamental shift in healthcare, with personalized medicine at the forefront of innovation. Unlike traditional treatments, which apply a broad-spectrum approach, personalized medicine tailors therapies to an individual’s genetic profile, increasing efficacy and reducing side effects. This transformation is creating a booming market, with the global precision medicine industry valued at $89.9 billion in 2023 and projected to reach $161.1 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7%.

Investors are taking note, with 2024 marking a surge in funding toward genetic editing and the development of precision treatments targeting specific proteins and biomarkers. These breakthroughs allow for highly targeted therapies that improve patient outcomes and hold the potential to revolutionize disease treatment. "I have been giving a lot of thought this year to new trends in biotech and healthcare," says Daniel J. Arbess, Founder and CEO at Xerion Investments, US during a recent Global Investment Leaders Club (G.I.L.C.) gathering. "One of the most significant shifts is in personalized medicine, where we are moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach toward treatments customized for individual genetic profiles."

With major pharmaceutical companies doubling down on acquisitions and partnerships in this space, such as Merck’s interest in SpringWorks Therapeutics following its FDA approval, personalized medicine is emerging as one of the most promising frontiers for investment. As precision therapies continue to evolve, investors who recognize the potential of this paradigm shift stand to benefit from both financial returns and the profound impact on global healthcare.

Space Tech: The Next Frontier for Investment

Once the domain of government agencies and billion-dollar enterprises, space technology is now rapidly evolving into a commercially viable and investor-friendly sector. Falling launch costs, advancements in reusable rockets and increasing private sector involvement have fueled unprecedented growth in the industry. With the global space economy projected to reach $1 trillion by 2040, opportunities in satellite broadband, Earth observation and defense-related technologies are attracting significant investment.

Favorable economic conditions and an expected wave of company exits in 2025 are set to inject even more capital into the sector, accelerating innovation. The decreasing costs of satellite deployment, driven by breakthroughs like SpaceX’s Starship, have dramatically expanded what’s possible in space. “The cost barriers that once restricted space exploration and commercialization are disappearing,” says Kilian Graulich, Founder at KCG Advisory, Switzerland during a recent panel discussion held by the G.I.L.C. “With Starship and the reduced costs of satellite launches, entirely new opportunities are emerging, ones that were unthinkable just a few years ago. Space tech isn’t just growing; it’s on the verge of transforming multiple industries.” From space-based communication networks to asteroid mining and deep-space exploration, the commercialization of space is unfolding at an accelerated pace. Investors with a long-term perspective are positioning themselves to benefit from this technological revolution, making space tech one of the most exciting frontiers for future growth.

Offshore Wind and Grid Innovations

As the world accelerates its transition to renewable energy, offshore wind power is emerging as a crucial player in the sustainable energy landscape. Unlike onshore wind farms, offshore wind installations can harness stronger and more consistent winds, making them a viable solution for large-scale energy production. The sector is experiencing rapid expansion, with the offshore wind market projected to reach $87.92 billion by 2032, growing at a robust CAGR of 12.9% from 2025 to 2032.

Beyond generation, innovations in energy distribution are also transforming the grid. Emerging solutions, such as large battery-equipped freighters that transport energy across regions with weak grid infrastructure, are helping stabilize power supply in markets with fluctuating demand. “Offshore wind is a game-changer in regions where conditions are optimal,” says Trista Bridges, Principal and Cofounder at Read The Air, Japan, during a recent G.I.L.C. gathering. “At the same time, energy distribution is evolving, with mobile battery storage solutions allowing electricity to be moved where it’s needed most. These advancements are crucial for making renewable energy a reliable, scalable investment.

With increasing governmental support and private-sector investments, offshore wind and grid innovations are shaping the next phase of clean energy. Investors looking to capitalize on the future of sustainable energy should consider the growing opportunities in these rapidly evolving technologies.

Conclusion

While AI remains a dominant force in tech investments, other emerging sectors are rapidly shaping the future. Biotechnology is revolutionizing healthcare through precision medicine, space technology is unlocking new commercial opportunities and offshore wind energy is driving sustainable innovation. These industries are not only advancing at an unprecedented pace but also presenting investors with high-growth potential. Diversifying beyond AI and recognizing these transformative shifts will be key to staying ahead in an evolving investment landscape.
